Palestrina 500
2025 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, who ranks among the most influential figures of the Renaissance. He expertly adapted the prevailing style of Franco-Flemish polyphony to the aesthetic ideals of the Catholic Church during the Counter-Reformation. Palestrina’s polyphony seamlessly blends multiple voices to produce music that is transcendent in its complexity and tonal clarity.
Columbus-based Fior Angelico will perform his stunning six-part Missa Tu es Petrus. The mass is a beautiful example of Palestrina’s masterful use of polyphony in a way that glorified the aesthetic ideals of the Catholic Church during the Counter-Reformation.
Fior Angelico was formed in 2006 and is dedicated to the performance of early music for a cappella choir. The name Fior Angelico comes from the title of a 1547 music theory treatise, Fior angelico di musica (“The Angelic Flower of Music”), written by Fra Angelo da Picitono.
